Bugs That Bite UK – The Most Common Types

03-04-2018

Have you ever looked down at an itchy or sore spot on your skin and seen a raised, red bump? It’s a very common occurrence, and it always leads to the questions what is this bug bite? There are a lot of pests that can bite in the UK, and finding the right bug bite treatments means you need the right UK bug bite identification.

In this blog, we’re going to take a look at the bugs that bite UK, and what you can do as far as treatment and pest control to stop them taking another nibble.

Mosquitoes
These biting insects are probably the ones that first came to mind when you think of bugs that bite. When the weather is warm and damp, mosquitoes become a real nuisance, and their bite packs a real punch. Mosquitoes generally start buzzing around in April, then they annoy us throughout the summer for 6 long months of itchy bites.

If you are planning on taking any camping or picnicking trips, we have some advice for you. Stay away from warm, damp places like lakes and ponds, because this is where you will find the most mosquitoes. And the more mosquitoes there are, the more likely you’ll be bitten.

Mosquito bites can be avoided using a few techniques such as:
• Using insect repellent;
• Avoiding when mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk;
• Keeping the windows closed when you know mosquitoes are nearby, or investing in mosquito nets;
• Cover your skin.

Ticks
Ticks are dangerous if you are bitten by one because of the diseases they transmit, the most common of which is Lyme Diseases. In the countryside in the UK the tick population is booming, and ever on the increase.

Ticks live in thick and tall grass, perfect for hiding. Once they bite they will remain on your skin. To avoid tick bites you can:

• Stay away from dense woodland;
• Cover up your skin if you are going into tick hotspots;
• Check your skin if you’ve visited a tick hotspot.

Horse Flies
Horse flies look like the common house fly, but they bite. You will most commonly find horse flies around any farm or livestock, including stables. This is where you will need the most fly control. Animal manure and wet straw are their perfect habitat.

To avoid horse fly bites, you can:
• Keep manure and wet straw to a minimum around your livestock;
• Use insect repellents.
