Types Of Bees You Might See In The UK

30-08-2017

How has your summer been so far? Have you been enjoying your garden? Whilst your sitting outside in the lovely weather we’ve been having, take some time to pay attention to the small, but very important creatures that live around us – our bees.

If you have a lot of flowers in your garden, they should be frequented by a lot of bees. Take some time to watch them and see if you can spot one of the 26 different species of bee we have here in the UK.

There are 7 bees that are very common in the UK. Look at our list of these seven bees, and see if you can point out the different bee types around your garden.

1. The most common bee in the UK is the buff-tailed bumblebee. It’s one of the biggest you can find, and has two yellow-golden stripes with a brown-black tail.
2. Another common type of bee is the white-tailed bumble which is very similar to the buff-tailed. The only difference is that the tail is white, as the name suggests, and the stripes appear paler (more of a lemon yellow).
3. The garden bumblebee is white-tailed with three yellow stripes. It uses it’s long tongue to suck nectar from flowers that other bees can’t reach.
4. The red-tailed bumblebee has a bright red bottom with velvety black parts.
5. Then comes the common carder bumblebee, not as pretty as other common UK bees. It is a boring gingery brown colour all over.
6. The smallest, sweetest bee is the early bumblebee. It’s smaller than the others, with two yellow stripes and red little bottom.
7. Finally is the tree bumblebee. It is a chestnut brown colour at the front, black on it’s body with a white bottom. This is the most common bee that you will find nesting in your trees.

Bees will be around until the end of summer. Remember to move very slowly when approaching bees. They are very docile insects and won’t want to sting you unless they feel threatened. The same guidelines for safety apply as they do for UK wasp control and precautions, generally speaking.

If you are having a problem with bees on your property, it’s important to call in professional pest controller to remove them. Bees are an endangered species, and have to be treated with care.
